Questions to ask your Pediatrician

Expecting a child can be, and in many ways will be, one of the most exciting and stressful times of your life. Bringing new life into the world is a beautiful thing and should be an event worth celebrating. However, it is extremely important to have pediatric consultants there to guide you and your family in the right direction along the journey. It is also important to have an idea of what questions to ask about while you are still expecting.

Who will be our newborn pediatrician?

One of the first questions you should ask is “who will be my newborn pediatrician?” This is extremely vital information. Your first newborn pediatrician visit should take place 24-48 hours after discharge. This visit is one of the most important appointments to keep.

How is my little bundle of joy doing?

At the first visit to the pediatrician, the doctor should be checking your newborn’s functions on every level. Be sure to ask about the infant’s eyes, ears, weight, and organ functions like the heart. Also, make sure that the infant is not jaundiced, which is a condition that causes yellowing of the skin.

So breastfeeding…it’s simple right?

We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need when it comes to breastfeeding with your newborn child. It’s important that you go through the ins and outs of the activity. Techniques, frequency and making sure your infant is breastfeeding well are a great start for most parents regarding questions. Your pediatrician will be able to tell you if the infant is latching properly and getting enough at your visit. We also have a lactation consultant on staff to advise and guide you.

Side note: Pediatric Partners has a new breastfeeding room at our Evans location. This peaceful and tranquil room is the perfect place for moms to nurse during their visit to our office. Look no further than Pediatric Partners if you’re in a need of a pediatrician in Augusta, GA.

Is this a normal occurrence with infants?

This may be the most important question to ask, and it’s your responsibility to ask it! The pediatricians will understand your concern because they know how important a newborn child is to his or her parents. Do not be afraid to ask your pediatrician about something you noticed while at home with your child. In most cases, you will find that what’s happening is completely normal, like feeding or hydration issues for example. Still, it is extremely important that you do ask to be sure that the doctor doesn’t need to take a deeper look into it. You will feel re-assured and happy that you asked.
